Feldenkrais Method of Awareness Through Movement
The Feldenkrais Method of Awareness Through Movement is a type of physical therapy developed by Moshe Feldenkrais in the 1950s. It is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development. This form of somatic education uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance human functioning.
The technique, which focuses on the relationship between movement and thought, can help individuals overcome limitations brought on by misuse or overuse of muscles, stress, accident or illness.
This effective tool for improving the body’s innate capacity to learn to move intelligently includes all body parts in every action. Positive results do not depend upon stretching or softening muscles, but on improving the effectiveness with which the brain coordinates and controls movements.
Individuals learn to perceive consciously how they move; where there is tension in the body; where unnecessary effort is exerted; and when they are not making use of their full potential. This knowledge, and the rediscovery of our innate capacity for graceful and efficient movement, allows for the development of new and effortless movements, increases ease and range of motion and improves flexibility and coordination.
A Feldenkrais practitioner directs attention to inefficient or strained habitual movement patterns and attempts to teach new patterns using gentle, slow, repeated movements. Slow repetition is considered necessary to impart a new habit and allow it to begin to feel normal. These movements may be performed by the practitioner on the recipient's body or by the subject.
